Cranes Restoration – A Brief History

Our fleet of professional equipment at Cranes Restoration include:

Cranes Upholstery was opened in 1927 and was originally operated by Stu Crane.

“The upholstery company was purchased in 1962 by Vince Thickson (my grandfather) and Chris Ramage. It ran as a successful partnership doing residential and commercial upholstery. In 1964 the business took an interesting twist when an insurance adjuster called about fixing a cigarette burn in a car seat. Once the repair was complete, the adjuster asked if Cranes Restoration was capable of cleaning the interior of the vehicle as well. My grandfather (Vince) brought in my father (Brad) to clean the vehicle from smoke/odour damage on the weekend while he was out of school. Brad would have been 13 at the time.

Calls for this type of work became more frequent and it was not long before adjusters started asking if we could apply these cleaning techniques to homes and buildings. The restoration business was born.

My father (Brad) became a partner at Cranes Restoration in 1972. He grew the restoration business and modelled the company to what it is today with training and quality workmanship through to 1998 when I started with the company at 19 years of age. I spent many years learning all aspects of the business until our eventual takeover in 2011. My wife (Stacey) and I now run the operations with large growth taking place over the past two years. As a third-generation owner with many years of service to Medicine Hat and area, we are pleased to help people when disaster strikes.”

Restore Medicine Hat & Habitat for Humanity: Partnerships We’re Proud Of

Recently, we have added a new way to help. This is through the strong partnership we have developed with Habitat for Humanity of Alberta in Medicine Hat. This non-profit organization has helped hundreds of people find adequate shelter for their families. From newly built homes to remodels, the people of Habitat for Humanity in Medicine Hat have worked hard to assist those who are in need.

We work closely with Habitat and purchase some of our building materials directly from their ReStore. The ReStore is a building supply store where both individuals and companies like our own purchase slightly used building materials for a much lower price. This helps us save our customers money while still providing high-quality materials for their homes. In return, the money made from the sale of these materials goes directly back into Habitat for Humanity’s budget, allowing them to continue to provide shelter for those in need.

At ReStore Medicine Hat, you can find a wide range of building materials such as doors, windows, and other new and used items. Sometimes our jobs require, for example, only replacing a single baseboard. So instead of purchasing all new ones, we look for one that will match the old ones. This helps us keep down costs – savings which we can then pass on to the customer. This works well when dealing with insurance companies who are often strict about what they will pay for.

The ReStore gets its building materials from major construction and restoration companies all over Alberta, including us here at Cranes Restoration. Whenever we finish a job, and we have usable building scraps left over, we donate them to Habitat for Humanity of Alberta in Medicine Hat. Recently, we donated truckloads! They can either use these materials on one of their own building projects or put them for sale in the ReStore.

This symbiotic relationship of giving and taking works well for both our company and Habitat for Humanity. But those who are in need are the ones that benefit the most. We are proud to have a working relationship with Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Medicine Hat and look forward to many years of combined effort to help those in need.
